16 Travel Safety Tips

No matter where you’re traveling this season and no matter how you’re getting there, the safety of you and your family is at the forefront of your mind.  From keeping your children safe to protecting your money and documents, use these tips to travel safely.

The most important thing to keep in mind when traveling whether it be by car, air, or boat, is to be aware of your surroundings at all times.  This will greatly improve your chances of arriving at your destination safely and without incident.  If you are traveling with small children, never turn your attention away from them as it only takes a split second to lose them.  Traveling with pets, especially by car, can be safer for everyone if the proper precautions are taken.

Tips to Travel Safely

1. Never discuss your travel plans on the internet.  You are just setting yourself up for trouble.

2. Plan ahead – try to have supplies on hand especially if you are not going to be able to stop to rummage through a suitcase.  If traveling with children, make sure you have food and drink accessible.

3. When making a cash purchase, don’t take all of your money out of your wallet or purse.  Sort through and take out just what you need to make that purchase.

4. Don’t keep all of your money and documents in one place.  If that “place” (like your wallet or purse) are stolen, everything is gone.

5. If flying, check with your airline for regulations about what you can carry-on versus what you have to check.

6. Arrange emergency information with family members who are not traveling with you, that way if something does happen, you’re family will know what to do.

7. Park in well lit areas and make sure to lock your vehicle any time you have to walk away from it.

8. Never travel with fireworks.

9. Try not to wear jewelry or even watches that look expensive – you could be inviting unwanted attention.

10. If taking a taxi, sit behind the driver.  This allows you to see him but he can’t see you.

11. Always travel with some sort of first aid kit.

12. Keep a flashlight in your car.

13. Always stay with your luggage no matter where you are: in airports, hotel lobby’s, sidewalks, in line, etc…

14. Never put your address on a luggage tag.

15. Always keep your important documents with you at all times, like your passport.  Never check them if flying.

16. If traveling with children or pets, have an up to date picture of them.  God forbid they go missing, you’ll have a recent picture to show officials.
