Tybee’s 5 Miles of Beach ~ The Main Attraction

Tybee Island has one of the most beautiful beaches along the Georgia coastline, making up five miles of the most perfect sandcastle making sand, warm ocean water, and breathtaking panoramic views.  Known as Savannah’s beach, Tybee Island is the perfect destination for families, couples, singles, and friends.  Low tide even makes for a charming bike ride!

There are five sections to Tybee Beach, each offering something a little different.

The most popular section is called South Beach, which encompasses 14th St. south to 18th St., and is where you’ll find the area’s surfers catching the waves.  South Beach is located next to Tybee’s main business district, and is within a block or two of most of the island’s hotels and motels, as well as many restaurants, bars, and places to shop.  Large public oceanfront parking lots are available at 14th St. and Tybrisa St., and is just a few steps from the 17th Street Inn.

Mid Beach makes up 1st St. south to 14th St., and is much less crowded than South Beach.  While this section of the beach offers public beach crossovers, there are only two popular lodging establishments and one restaurant in this area.

If you’re looking for the perfect location for shelling, seeing dolphins, and viewing international ships as they travel to and from the Port of Savannah, North Beach is the place for you.  Located at the mouth of the Savannah River, surrounding Fort Screven, you can also see the Tybee Museum and Light Station, as well as plenty of birds at the popular Bird Viewing Area.

Savannah River Beach encompasses Lazaretto Creek to North Jetty and is the section of beach most popular with families.  Featuring low waves and dolphin spotting, Savannah River Beach can be reached by walking from the North Beach Lot.  Keep in mind there are no public restrooms at this section of Tybee Beach.

The smallest section of Tybee Beach is Back River Beach, located on 18th St., South Jetty west to Back River Fishing Pier.  With beautiful views of Little Tybee Island and low waves, this section of beach is slightly more difficult to access.

The reasons to visit Tybee Island are endless but the beach is definitely the main attraction!

Which of the 5 sections of beach is your first choice?
