Celebrate Mardi Gras Tybee Island Style

In the mood for some partying, fun, dressing up, and seeing live entertainment?  Well that’s exactly what’s in store this February 17th and 18th with the return of the annual Mardi Gras celebration here on Tybee Island!  The carnival season is officially beginning, bringing with it island characters that will march through the streets in the city’s Mardi Gras parade.  The festivities kick off on Friday, with a masquerade ball that includes a costume contest to crown Tybee’s Mardi Gras king and queen, with the fun continuing into Saturday with a street party at Tybee’s beachfront pier.

Tybee Island is home to Georgia’s largest public beach and is located just 18 miles east of well known Savannah, making it an ideal location to hold the annual event, not to mention its unique character and fun loving residents!  The three mile long beach has a backdrop of sand dunes and is perfect for sunbathing, people-watching, and enjoying the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

Take a look at Mardi Gras 2010, which was the second annual celebration presented by Tybeefest.

Tybeefest is an all volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to providing entertainment, events, and festivals on Tybee Island for the enjoyment of Tybee residents and visitors alike.

Tybee Island will be decorated in an array of gold, green, and purple flags, fun costumes and characters, and will stand up to its reputation of “Best Beach Retreat”, as described by Atlanta Creative Loafing and “Best Beach” by Georgia Magazine.  This now popular Tybee Island event will encompass the traditions of Mardi Gras, an event with origins dating back to the ancient Romans and carried on today in other cities such as Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans, Louisiana.

Other must-sees on Tybee Island include the Tybee Island Lighthouse, as well as the full range of restaurants, modern hotels and motels, luxurious condominiums, and quaint inns and cottages.  It’s a residential area stocked with its share of a laid back atmosphere and fun times!
