5 “Don’t Miss” Things To Do on Tybee Island

Tybee Island, Ga is just a short 20 minutes away from well-known Savannah, and comes with an entire selection of things to do and things you shouldn’t miss when you are here.  Whether you live here or vacation here, the sun and surf just call to you!  When you are staying at the 17th Street Inn, all of these “don’t miss” attractions are close enough that you will be able to plan them into your schedule.

1. Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum
Not only is the Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum a must see attraction if you are in Tybee, but it also tops the charts if anywhere near Georgia!  The Tybee Island Light Station has been guiding mariners safe entrance into the Savannah River for over 270 years.  The Tybee Island Light Station is one of America’s most intact having all of its historic support buildings on its five-acre site.  Taking the steps to the top of the lighthouse offers a gorgeous view of the island, and you never know what else you may see from that high up with all of the natural wildlife there is on Tybee.

The Tybee Lighthouse is open everyday except Tuesday from 9am-5:30pm with some exceptions for holidays.  The cost per person is $8.00 and children get in for $6.00.  The museum is located just across the street.

2. Captain Mike’s Dolphin Tours
Each and every year since 2003, Captain Mike’s has been voted Tybee’s best adventure tour by Tybee Breeze readers!  Lazaretto Creek Marina and Captain Mike’s Dolphin Tours have been family owned and operated since 1992, offering the best in dolphin tours, sunset cruises, and inshore and deep sea fishing.

The tour lasts approximately one to one and half hours, depending on where the dolphins are playing, with rates being only $15.00 for adults and $8.00 for children, 12 and under.  Reservations are recommended as these tours fill up fast!

In addition to Captain Mike’s Dolphin Tours, you can also check out Captain Derek’s Dolphin Adventure.

3. Fort Pulaski National Monument
Learn about the Civil War and have fun while you’re doing it at the beautifully restored Fort Pulaski National Monument.  The fort is surrounded by a moat, as well as a drawbridge to enter it.  You will have the opportunity to be guided along a 60 to 90 minute tour of the grounds, see cannonball demonstrations, and also visit the underground tunnels!  It costs $5.00 per person over 16 years old.

4. North Island Surf and Kayak
The North Island Surf and Kayak is the most eco-friendly operation on Tybee Island where you can take a kayak and meander through the marshes and rivers, or around the barrier islands to observe wildlife such as dolphins, otter, osprey, and a variety of wading and migratory birds.  You can also paddle your way out to Cockspur Beacon and climb to the top to observe the gorgeous panoramic view.

5. Sundial Charter Tours
If you are intersted in bird watching, beach combing and shell collecting, or dolphin viewing, then Sundial Charter Tours will make it happen!  One tour even offers back country exploring and extended time at the beach, along with a stop at a 2,000 pound eagle’s nest.  Other highlights that you can expect from Sundial Charter Tours are alligator sightings, crabbing, fossil hunting, and fishing for bass, trout, and flounder.  There is something for everyone to enjoy on these tours and is a “don’t miss” attraction on Tybee Island!
